EdgeTech 2200 Series Side Scan Sonar Installed on Focus-2 Remotely Operated Tow Vehicle (ROTV). Fugro Survey Limited has two purpose-built MacArtney Focus-2 ROTV systems used for marine pipeline inspection. The Focus-2 carries a range of sensor packages of underwater equipment including an EdgeTech 2200 Series Side Scan Sonar operating at 300 and 600 kHz, an EdgeTech Sub-bottom Profiler, multi-beam bathymetry, mechanical forward looking sonar, mechanical scanning profiling sonar, fiber optic gyro and compass.
The Focus-2 is an actively controlled tow vehicle that provides increased stability (decimeter accuracy in height above seabed plus superior roll/pitch/yaw control). It is also a closed loop system. Images from the side scan sonar are analyzed in real time and the system provides a real time feed back to the vehicle control module that keeps the ROTV at the right lateral distance from the pipeline. This results in improved data quality and therefore a more precise image of the pipeline.
